Death and graves

When you die in the survival worlds (the Claiming World, the resource worlds, the Nether and the End), your things do not scatter on the ground. They go into a grave where you fell: a headstone with your head on it and your body lying beside it, glowing red so you can spot it.

  1. Read your death message. It gives the world and coordinates of your grave.
  2. Head back. While you are within 96 blocks, a beacon column only you can see rises over your grave.
  3. Click the body (right or left click) to open the grave. Take what you want. Your armor and off-hand go straight back on first.

A hologram over the grave shows how many items and how much XP it holds, and how long it has left.

RuleValue
A grave lasts3 hours, then it is gone (it spills its contents)
Protected from other players for5 minutes (a player who killed you can open it right away)
Graves you can have at once5. A 6th death empties your oldest grave onto the ground, so go get it before the items despawn.
XPStored in the grave. You get 50% of it back.
Items with Curse of Vanishing or BindingNot kept

Underwater deaths: your grave sinks to the bottom. Recalling to an underwater grave is free.

CommandWhat it does
/gravesOpens your graves: each one’s world, coordinates, contents, distance and time left.
/graves tp <#>Teleports you to grave number #. Unlocks at Swordfish rank. Costs a fee, has a 5 second warm-up and a 30 second cooldown.

There is no /back to your death point. Finding your way back is part of the game, and the coordinates, menu and beacon are there to help.

Some fights are tough enough that losing your gear would be unfair. In these places you keep everything when you die and no grave is made:
